I make functional vessels - bottles, jars, vases and lidded pots. I aim for the beauty and appeal of the pot to lie not just in its look but also how it feels when held. All of my pots are individually hand thrown. I like to give my pots interest through texture created when the pot is leather hard with a variety of different wooden tools. I stick to a simple glaze palette of matt white or Y'ching. I use either stoneware or crank clay, which is texturally interesting especially when pieces are fired in a reduction kiln. Many of my lidded pots are thrown as a single closed form which is then cut into to create the lid. I also enjoy making larger works through combining two or more thrown pieces.
I began studying ceramics eight years ago at the Putney School of Art. What began as a bit of a hobby has become an obsession and I have developed my own distinctive style. I've always been interested in ceramics and even before I starting potting, I had shelves groaning with ceramics picked up from holidays abroad, from aging relatives, boot fairs and auctions. I have recently started selling my pottery at a few outlets and galleries in South West London and am happily able to devote more time to making ceramics.
