Rising Stars 2019

Rising Stars is a platform for some of the most exciting new crafts by emerging makers in crafts, design and applied arts - this year, the exhibition is bigger than ever, following a record number of applications.

This curated, selling exhibition will be showcased at the New Ashgate Gallery and also include a programme of makers' professional development events and a £500 prize. The participants are graduating students, recent graduates or at a pivotal moment in their early career due to changed circumstances.

This year, the project received 109 applications. 30 makers have been selected for the exhibition by a panel of craft professionals, focusing on their potential and talent; Rebecca Skeels, Course Leader for Postgraduate Programmes, School of Craft and Design, University for the Creative Arts, Gemma Curtis, Crafts Programme Coordinator, the Farnham Maltings and Dr Outi Remes, Director, New Ashgate Gallery.

Many of the graduating makers are at cross roads: they have a full portfolio of fabulous ideas, but are yet to establish their business skills and a network of collectors. Rising Stars offers just the right platform, and for many, it is a starting point for an exceptional career. Rising Stars is an opportunity for both makers as well as art collectors who wish to support and collect work by future stars.

The selected makers of exceptional talent are: Angelina Jane, Arra Textiles, Louise Bell, Georgia Buck, Holly Burton, Eve Campbell, Jenny Chan, Sara Chyan, Kim Colebrook, Mihaela Coman, Natalie Eagle, Tamir Erlich, Alice Funge, Alysa Freeman, Susanna Gogarty, Iona Hall, Qiang Li, Marek Liska, Sam Lucas, Ruth Martindale, Bekky May, Annette Mills, Poppy Norton, Benjamin Pearey, Mitch Pilkington, Nastassia Ramazankhani, Kyle Ramsey, Catherine Rua, Jinya Zhao and Marissa Ziesing.

Rising Stars is organised by the New Ashgate Gallery and supported by the Billmeir Charitable Trust. We work in partnership with the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham.

Annette Mills

2018 MA Textiles, University for the Creative Arts
1978 BA (Hons) BA Hons History of Modern Art and Design, Newcastle upon Tyne Polytechnic

As an artist-maker, working with fibre and plant material, Annette researches and incorporates traditional basketry techniques to create dynamic and tactile sculptural forms. She works with a variety of plant species and fibres which she can grow, harvest and forage: daffodils, iris, grasses, rush and willow. By combining them with the ancient techniques of looping, twining and weave she makes baskets with a contemporary twist.

Annette's creative practice is concerned with the haptic and concepts linked to transitional space. Change is inherent in the physical processes of her making and consequently, guide and structure her decision making.

The random weaving of willow appears chaotic until, working with the dynamic and tensile qualities of the material, a potential form is suggested and a structure begins to emerge. Her work explores how this process can be considered as movement through transitional spaces, including time, and if the initial feelings of excitement and energy can be retained within the captured space of the refined and completed work.

Annette is the Artist in Residence at UCA Farnham, and she is extending her range of materials to explore the interface between basketry and ceramics and their relationship with the space they contain and inhabit.

Annette is based in Hampshire.
