Rising Stars 2019

Rising Stars 2019

Rising Stars is a platform for some of the most exciting new crafts by emerging makers in crafts, design and applied arts - this year, the exhibition is bigger than ever, following a record number of applications.

This curated, selling exhibition will be showcased at the New Ashgate Gallery and also include a programme of makers' professional development events and a £500 prize. The participants are graduating students, recent graduates or at a pivotal moment in their early career due to changed circumstances.

This year, the project received 109 applications. 30 makers have been selected for the exhibition by a panel of craft professionals, focusing on their potential and talent; Rebecca Skeels, Course Leader for Postgraduate Programmes, School of Craft and Design, University for the Creative Arts, Gemma Curtis, Crafts Programme Coordinator, the Farnham Maltings and Dr Outi Remes, Director, New Ashgate Gallery.

Many of the graduating makers are at cross roads: they have a full portfolio of fabulous ideas, but are yet to establish their business skills and a network of collectors. Rising Stars offers just the right platform, and for many, it is a starting point for an exceptional career. Rising Stars is an opportunity for both makers as well as art collectors who wish to support and collect work by future stars.

The selected makers of exceptional talent are: Angelina Jane, Arra Textiles, Louise Bell, Georgia Buck, Holly Burton, Eve Campbell, Jenny Chan, Sara Chyan, Kim Colebrook, Mihaela Coman, Natalie Eagle, Tamir Erlich, Alice Funge, Alysa Freeman, Susanna Gogarty, Iona Hall, Qiang Li, Marek Liska, Sam Lucas, Ruth Martindale, Bekky May, Annette Mills, Poppy Norton, Benjamin Pearey, Mitch Pilkington, Nastassia Ramazankhani, Kyle Ramsey, Catherine Rua, Jinya Zhao and Marissa Ziesing.

Rising Stars is organised by the New Ashgate Gallery and supported by the Billmeir Charitable Trust. We work in partnership with the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham.

Ruth Martindale

2017 Apprenticeship at Cardozo Kindersley Workshop, Cambridge

Ruth is a letter cutter, working mainly in stone. All her lettering is drawn, designed and cut by hand, using traditional methods and tools. She trained for three years at the Cardozo Kindersley Workshop in Cambridge, founded by the renowned British stone letter-carver and typeface designer David Kindersley. Ruth also learnt masonry at the Building Crafts College in London which, gave her a good knowledge and grounding in masonry techniques and three dimensional carving.

Prior to this Ruth studied at Wimbledon College of Art, working with sculptures and installations in a more contemporary way. The creativity and aesthetic knowledge she gained from this experience have been invaluable to her lettering designs, she said.

Whilst working in contemporary art Ruth felt that the handmade was missing from her life . Starting on the masonry course was when Ruth realised that she felt most at home with a chisel in her hand. That and a love of intricate and detailed working led her to lettering, and that is where she found her home.

Ruth is based in London.
