Rising Stars 2019

Rising Stars is a platform for some of the most exciting new crafts by emerging makers in crafts, design and applied arts - this year, the exhibition is bigger than ever, following a record number of applications.

This curated, selling exhibition will be showcased at the New Ashgate Gallery and also include a programme of makers' professional development events and a £500 prize. The participants are graduating students, recent graduates or at a pivotal moment in their early career due to changed circumstances.

This year, the project received 109 applications. 30 makers have been selected for the exhibition by a panel of craft professionals, focusing on their potential and talent; Rebecca Skeels, Course Leader for Postgraduate Programmes, School of Craft and Design, University for the Creative Arts, Gemma Curtis, Crafts Programme Coordinator, the Farnham Maltings and Dr Outi Remes, Director, New Ashgate Gallery.

Many of the graduating makers are at cross roads: they have a full portfolio of fabulous ideas, but are yet to establish their business skills and a network of collectors. Rising Stars offers just the right platform, and for many, it is a starting point for an exceptional career. Rising Stars is an opportunity for both makers as well as art collectors who wish to support and collect work by future stars.

The selected makers of exceptional talent are: Angelina Jane, Arra Textiles, Louise Bell, Georgia Buck, Holly Burton, Eve Campbell, Jenny Chan, Sara Chyan, Kim Colebrook, Mihaela Coman, Natalie Eagle, Tamir Erlich, Alice Funge, Alysa Freeman, Susanna Gogarty, Iona Hall, Qiang Li, Marek Liska, Sam Lucas, Ruth Martindale, Bekky May, Annette Mills, Poppy Norton, Benjamin Pearey, Mitch Pilkington, Nastassia Ramazankhani, Kyle Ramsey, Catherine Rua, Jinya Zhao and Marissa Ziesing.

Rising Stars is organised by the New Ashgate Gallery and supported by the Billmeir Charitable Trust. We work in partnership with the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham.

Alysa Freeman

2018 MA Design, University of the West of England
2010 BA (Hons), Top Up - Applied Art and Design, Bournemouth University

Alysa has spent three years developing and refining her connection with material and concept. Newspaper is ephemeral, losing its value in a matter of hours. By putting it through a complex process of compression and manipulation, Alysa is crafting a new material which can be worked and shaped; transmuting waste into functional and decorative hand-crafted pieces of jewellery. Using newspaper also allowed her to explore ideas around the use of text to viewers and wearers. For most people, the presence of text on paper invites the viewer to seek messages and meaning in the print. However, as a dyslexic maker, she perceives text as texture.

Alysa stacks the raw material and abrades the surface to reveal complex layers of print that read in reverse, in opposing directions, cross-over, overlap and intermingle. The meaning and context of the words are blurred and lost, inviting the viewer to see text - not immediately intelligible - and to examine the way in which the viewer or wearer seeks to take meaning from the printed word.

Once the paper has gone through the fabrication process the material is strong but lightweight which means that even large, visually bold, statement-pieces sit easily on the wearer and are comfortable. This repurposed material is finished with high quality hand-made silver findings.

Alysa is based in Exeter.
