We are delighted to present a new body of work by one of the best known names in figurative art - Graham Dean. Dean's career has spanned over four decades and his work has been exhibited worldwide. His watercolours are described as 'extraordinary' and 'immensely powerful', depicting relentless investigation of the human body.
These paintings use the figure not in a literal way but as a vehicle to convey ideas, emotions and psychological states: they escape the illustrative through the artist's ability to draw a broader meaning from the deeply personal.
For this exhibition, Dean will present the new "Dirty Yellow" collection that has not been exhibited in the UK. He says: "With 'Dirty Yellow', I changed the way I work, adopting a fluid style, mixing two colours - yellow and charcoal grey. When the paint dried I sometimes worked into the image but more often not as the 'vibrancy' of the painting could be lost."
Dean's (b. 1951, Merseyside) solo exhibitions include Waterhouse & Dodd, Stephen Lacy, Jill George, Austin Desmond in London and at Frans Jacobs/Judith Bouwknegt in Amsterdam. His group shows include John Moores, ICA, Whitechapel Art Gallery and the Royal Academy. Dean has participated in some of the most prestigious art fairs, including FIAC, Paris, TEFAF, Maastricht and Basel Art Fair.
