Composition is key to my work, where a balance of weight of colour and expression of line is explored to portray the essence of the subject matter. Often the aim is for an economic use of line and colour. In practice the work is both observational and abstract.
The main themes in my work centre round 'landscape/cityscape' and the considerations for such spaces. I am interested in both the significance of place and a more generic interpretation of space in relation to 'our' existence within it. Myth and symbol are sometimes employed as a means of identification within a more abstract framework. Always challenged by the subjectivity of intention and interpretation, titles are important. Contrasts, comedy, allegory and the possibilities of dance and its roots in communication are other themes touched upon.
The process of printmaking and its inherent variety and quality of mark making possibilities also provides, by its' limitations, parameters to be stretched. The discipline of etching allows invention alongside technique. The monoprint process is more immediate and therefore closer to painting, although I have found both techniques have informed my approach to painting.
