Virginia Ray: Our Rich Industrial Heritage

Virginia's landscapes are inspired by the rich industrial heritage of West Cornwall and North Wales. This body of work, using mixed media, takes materials from these specific areas such as slate, tin, copper and stone dust. Each work engages with the landscape's natural elements and celebrates the rich materiality of the land. Virginia informs her work by walking the land, recording and photographing unique scenic aspects and retracing the footsteps of those who once populated these areas for quarrying and mining.

Away from the bustling beaches and seaside towns, she explores the remote beauty and drama of these marginal landscapes, uncovering what remains. Virginia is drawn to the ways in which human activity has shaped the land over the last few centuries, and continues to shape it today. In particular, her work explores how nature endures and, in all its diversity, has all but reclaimed evidence of a once busy industrial past in these beautiful areas.

Virginia has a BA Hons in History and has an MA in Fine Art, Farnham UCA. Virginia has exhibited in Galleries in London, including the Affordable Art Fair, Ibiza, Surrey, Norfolk, Cornwall and Yorkshire.
