Dave Roberts

Dave Roberts a pastel artist who paints the land and seascapes of North Wales. No-one who has walked its hills and coasts will need me to explain where Dave finds his inspiration.

However, his work is about light and how it profoundly alters the way we perceive these places. Dave says: "I'm particularly drawn to the moments around dawn as this is when I find the atmosphere is at its most ethereal. There is something very elemental about being alone in these vast landscapes in the half-light."

The result is paintings that are full of the rich blues and reds that we associate with that time of day, coupled with intense contrasts of light and shade. In many respects, Dave's work is the antithesis of how most people would imagine pastel paintings to be.

Dave works exclusively in soft pastels. Not only do he considers them to be unrivalled in terms of their richness of colour but they are such an immediate and uninhibited medium to use.

Dave says: "You're working directly on the paper with your fingers. There are no thinners, washes or drying times to worry about; there's no mixing of colours beforehand; there are no palettes, brushes or knives between you and the painting. With pastels you genuinely are at one with the creative process."
