Landscapes immediately local to Suzanne Winn's home in rural Hampshire form the core of her work. Central to her work is a desire to tap into the energy she feels when she is within the landscape. This energy for her brings a sense of movement and freedom, and a feeling of connection. Suzanne often revisits the same locations to work, so she can get to know these places intimately. A core aim for her is to convey something of how it feels to be within these spaces, and her emotional responses to experiencing nature in this way.
Suzanne says: "The first stage in my artistic process is to go out and draw within the landscape, using charcoals and/or pastels. I use charcoals to create tonal studies and pastels to lay down colour. I work rapidly, focusing on key shapes, tones and colours, and trying to capture the energy and feeling of the moment. Back in the studio I paint in oils from my sketches and memory. I typically choose a limited colour palette and mix up lots of paint as I think about and plan the work. When painting, I like to work quickly, instinctively and intuitively, focusing on conveying atmosphere and emotion."
