Maker in Focus: Will Shakspeare: Shakspeare Glass

We are delighted to exhibit a large selection of Shakspeare Glass this Christmas - from larger sculptures to beautiful vases and festive baubles.

Will Shakspeare is one of the country's best known glass blowers. He has been featured regularly in the press and on TV including Inside The Factory, Kirstie's Homemade Home and Kirstie's Homemade Christmas with Kirstie Allsopp, and in the Telegraph Magazine with David Nicholls. Will says:

It is interesting to see how a thread of an idea expands into a body of work, and in which direction it takes me. Sometimes I am not happy with where it is going, and at others I am pleased with where it has got to. At present I am in a landscape 'period' and enjoying a different way of looking at glass and bringing my inspiration home.

Will set up Shakspeare Glass over 25 years ago and has supplied many galleries and well-known stores in that time. He has also worked in Central and South America as a consultant in glass production and design.

Will Shakspeare's new collection of work is inspired by his new hobby of scuba diving and ongoing snorkeling trips. He has tried to capture the feel of the sea with the shoals of glittering fish, the shadows from the sunlight and reflections on pebbles and rocks on the sea floor.

Will set up Shakspeare Glass 25 years ago in a small workshop at the back of a garage in Burnham on Sea. He has become one of the leading British glassmakers, known for his wide range of work and his individual contemporary style.

Shakspeare Glass HQ is now by the River Parrett in Langport, a small historic town in the heart of the Somerset Levels.

However I make 3 dimensional things, it is just as important how they feel when you hold them as how they look with different lights coming through them. How heavy or light the pieces are and even what sort of a noise they make when you drop them on the floor.

I make lots of different work, as you have hopefully seen, I either have an active imagination or just can't concentrate, but at least it keeps me occupied. I work with a very small team which gives us the freedom to make a wide range of products and also allows us to be easily sidetracked into completely different projects from jewellery to bookshelves.
