Surrey Artist of the Year 2019

21 September to 2 November 2019

Surrey Artist of the Year 2019

The New Ashgate Gallery invites members of the public to come and vote for their favourite artist.

The Surrey Artist of the Year competition is a partnership between the New Ashgate and the Surrey Artists Open Studios to celebrate the wealth of creative talent in Surrey. Starting in 2009; this aspirational exhibition offers a collective of local quality arts and craft as voted for by the public during open studio visits. The top scoring artists come together for a programme of events. There is a wide variety of artworks on show, all offering different materials and techniques: painting, printmaking, glass, textiles and mixed media.

The shortlisted artists are: Clare Bowen, Orlanda Broom, Jennifer Court, Diana Croft, Clare Edworthy, Penny Fleet, Robyn Horsburgh, Christine Hopkins, David Johns, Will Johns, Julie Noles, Philip Ryland, Penny Webb, Pippa Ward and Abigail Wicking.

Again, during the exhibition, until 18th October, 12noon, members of the public are encouraged to vote for an artist; and the artist with the most votes from public and judging panel, is named Surrey Artist of the Year 2019 on 18th at 7pm. The winner receives a bursary of £1,000, a solo show at the New Ashgate Gallery and a complementary Winner's Stand at the Surrey Contemporary Art Fair.

Diana Croft

Diana produces collographs, linocuts and monoprints as well as mixed media paintings and stained glass panels. Her inspiration is rooted in nature and the landscape. The immediate environment has the most influence on her work whether it be the local Surrey Hills or the more exotic Far East where she travelled for three months in 2014 - she is interested in conveying the essence of a place. Diana's prints - particularly the recent linocuts have a strong sense of rhythm and stylised design reflecting the myriad patterns that form on the fields from centuries of grazing, ploughing and working the land. She loves the difference that the changing seasons bring to the land and particularly likes early spring when the colours are at their freshest and you can still see the structure of the landscape.

Diana has been a long standing member of the Greenwich Printmakers cooperative who have their own artist run gallery in Greenwich and are celebrating their 40th year this year. She was delighted to have a solo exhibition at the Watts Contemporary Gallery in 2018. She also exhibits regularly at the Battersea Affordable Art Fair. She has taken part in the Surrey Artists Open Studios scheme every year since it started, and was shortlisted for Surrey Artist of the Year in 2015.

Diana is based in Dorking.
