Rising Stars 2016

Rising Stars is a platform to view and collect some of the most exciting new art and craft by emerging artists and makers from crafts and applied arts programmes across the UK. This curated exhibition is accompanied by professional development and a cash prize. In the past, many of the selected exhibitors have gone on to a high profile career and elite programmes such as Hothouse supported by Crafts Council.

Many artists and makers who have just completed an MA or BA, or are still studying, are at a cross roads. They have a full portfolio of fabulous ideas, but do not have the proven exhibitor track record that most galleries are looking for. The New Ashgate Gallery offers an important platform and for many the starting point to an exceptional career.

The selected shortlist consists of Mike Barrett, Charlotte Biszewski, Aimee Bollu, Emma Buckley, Rachel Butlin, Karen Elizabeth Donovan, Carol Hunt, Tae Yeon Kim, Georgia Lingwood, Joanna Lloyd, Sarah Luxford, Jane Ogden-Swift, Henry Pucknell, Emma-Jane Rule, Emily Stapleton-Jefferis, Mircea Teleaga, Albeiro Rojas Tomedes and Melissa Yarlett. One of the participant will be chosen by a panel of judges as the Rising Stars 2016 winner - she or he will receive a cash prize and an exhibition at New Ashgate in 2017.

The selectors were Rebecca Skeels, Post Graduate Subject & Senior Tutor for University of Creative Arts Farnham; Caitlin Heffernan, Visual Officer for Surrey Arts and Caroline Jackman, artist and arts manager.

The programme is supported by the Billmeir Charitable Trust. It organised in partnership with the University for the Creative Arts.
