Caroline Nuttall-Smith

Caroline Nuttall-Smith, a distinguished ceramicist and printmaker based in Greenwich, combines her expertise in textile design with a profound love for ceramics. A graduate of the Chelsea School of Art and Central Saint Martins, Caroline earned her degree in Textile Design in 1989. She subsequently built a successful career as a freelance textile designer, contributing to both fashion and furnishing fabrics.

Fifteen years ago, Caroline discovered her passion for ceramics, which has since become the focal point of her artistic journey. Currently working at Thick as Milk studio in Woolwich, she hand-builds her pieces using stoneware clay. Caroline's approach to surface decoration is rooted in abstract mark making, utilising textures and monoprint techniques with colored clay slips and oxides. She enhances her creations with a combination of matte and shiny glazes, and employs wax resist to achieve diverse surface effects. Recently, she has also incorporated relief carving into her vessels, adding a new dimension to her work.

Caroline's primary body of work consists of unique cylinder vases designed to be displayed in harmonious groups. She also creates a striking collection of standing stones and birds in black stoneware, featuring incised abstract patterns.

Her deep admiration for mid-century design and artists significantly influences her ceramic pieces. She draws inspiration from the era's freedom in mark making, abstract patterns, and bold use of color, which is evident in the dynamic and expressive quality of her work.
