Alison White

Alison White's work has always been inspired by clean, simple, yet functional design. Since launching in the 1990s, her pieces have been sold in renowned retail outlets including The Conran Shop and Heals, both in the UK and abroad. Her designs were also selected for exhibition at the British Embassy in Paris to promote British design.

Alison draws inspiration from designers, artists, and art movements with whom she shares a common aesthetic. The Modernist movement and its values are a rich source of inspiration, with Josef Albers' writings on color theory and comprehensive examples of color being a constant reference for her color choices. She also regularly draws on the rich abstract surfaces created by artists such as Richard Smith, Franz Kline, and Victor Vasarely. The clean, minimal design of Scandinavian countries and the Japanese philosophy of art and design also influence her work.

The inherent qualities of her chosen materials significantly influence Alison's designs. The different surface qualities, feel, and weight of a fabric are crucial in choosing colors and patterns. The color intensity of prints on various fabrics can change dramatically. Alison also considers how a fabric moves and drapes, impacting the scale of the pattern and how much of it is revealed when draped, folded, or tied.

Alison begins by working on initial ideas in a notebook, then progresses to paper the size of the intended piece using collage, paint, and drawing. The design is then reworked on the computer before being sent for digital printing. Alison sees the computer as a tool to execute her designs, rather than as a means to complete the process.
