Tiffany Scull

Tiffany Scull intricately explores and celebrates the natural world through her ceramic forms and detailed sgraffito drawings. Working meticulously, she focuses on one piece at a time, carefully crafting each design using slips and clay, with the drying process crucial to allowing time for the intricate details to emerge.

Beginning with detailed pencil drawings of animals and habitats, Tiffany then throws the forms using white stoneware clay, turning them while still leather hard. Through a series of processes, she creates a textured, three-dimensional effect on the clay surface before applying her unique blend of slip colors developed over years of experimentation. Using handmade pointed tools, she meticulously draws on contrasting slip colors through sgraffito, bringing her designs to life. After slow drying, each piece undergoes two firings, with a clear glaze brushed onto the main themes, creating a striking contrast between glazed and unglazed surfaces. The final firing reaches 1180C in an electric kiln, resulting in beautifully finished ceramic pieces that capture the essence of the natural world.
