Bekky May

2018 MA Ceramics, University of Brighton
2010 BA (Hons) Art and Design - Ceramics, University of Brighton

Bekky designs and creates wall-based installations. She works with ceramics using the slip casting technique to create one-off contemporary sculptures, pushing the boundaries of materiality to fit a new approach to her creative practice.

Her process begins with a lump of smooth clay, carving it into a form to create a model. From this form, she creates a two-piece plaster mould - making multiple moulds allows her to produce collections of casts, building sequences of many small parts. She has developed a palette of botanical colour tones using stains, which she mixes into porcelain slip and fires to a high temperature to ensure strength and durability.

She is influenced by the Biophilia Effect, which is our intrinsic connection with the natural world. This addresses her innate need for nature and wilderness. Aiming to bring the soothing spirit of nature into manmade spaces, her work aspires to emphasise how sculptural contemporary ceramics can, and should be, integrated more thoughtfully into public and private spaces.

Bekky is based in Rye.
