Kathie Murphy

Kathie started jewellery evening classes at the age of 14 with Jonathan Swan in Lewes and went on to gain a degree from Middlesex Polytechnic 1990 and then a post graduate Diploma from Glasgow School of Art 1992 in the subject.

In 1990 she was the recipient of a Princes Youth Trust grant, which enabled her to set up a workshop.

Since 1992 Kathie has specialised in working in Polyester resin and continues to explore the possibilities of this material with the ethic that plastic is precious. Kathie makes the masters and moulds in to which she casts the resin. She mixes and hand colours small quantities of liquid resin at a time using a palette of pastes and pigments. The nature of the hand colouring means that each piece is quite individual. Once set each piece is filed and papered by hand before the fittings made by Kathie in silver and stainless steel, are added to the finished pieces. Her process allows control in all aspects of the making from beginning to end. Resin is a warm material making it tactile and very wearable.

As well as making jewellery Kathie worked for over ten years for the peripatetic Dazzle jewellery exhibitions at their Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester and London events, seven years of which she was manager of their Christmas exhibition at the National Theatre on the South Bank from November to January.

In 2002 she had a book published by A&C Black Ltd titled Resin Jewellery and in 2009 with the same publishers, Design and Make non-precious jewellery. See publications

Her work is in the collection of International jewellery at the Middlesborough Institute of Modern Art, Aberdeen City Art Gallery and National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh.

Kathie has taught at Wrexham Art School, Middlesex Polytechnic, West Dean College Sussex, City Lit London and Morley College London.
