Louise Bell

Louise is a ceramic artist making work that comments on the human condition using scale, colour and symbolism. Her work begins with a narrative to be explored. She investigates contemporary social issues and emotions that unite us all as individuals, aiming to communicate ideas by evoking feelings and memories in the viewer. Her ideas sometimes evolve from objects that have histories, which are then used as models for her work.

This body of work looks at the issues surrounding new parenthood, fatherhood in particular. Louise has researched the importance of the father/infant bond and led focus groups of new dads to explore their views. The work that emerged from this references feelings of vulnerability and the need for support. This is why she uses floatation aids as models for some of the work. She wanted to reference the baby's rattle, which has been given as a gift to new parents since the 14th Century.

The pieces reflect men's need to be playful, their desire for intimacy with their partners and the qualities and skills that they wish to pass on to their child. Each piece is designed to celebrate a father's new status and mark this important time in his life. It can also be seen as a reflection of contemporary fatherhood.

Louise has worked for 18 years in further education supporting young people with a wide variety of needs. She combines her people skills and interest in social issues, with her craft skills to make work that communicates current thinking and concerns.

Louise is based in East Sussex.
