Before retirement, John Bryce worked as a research scientist at the Royal Aerospace Establishment, Farnborough. He now pursues an active career as a painter and printmaker. He lives locally and finds inspiration in Farnham's old buildings and beautiful surrounding landscape.
John uses watercolour to paint directly from the subject. As a wood engraver, John also produces original limited-edition prints. This involves using fine tools to cut an image (in reverse) on hard endgrain box wood blocks and printing it onto paper with his Albion press. He was elected a member of the Society of Wood Engravers (SWE) in 1990 and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (RE) in 2010, exhibiting his work with them at the Bankside Gallery in London. He has also had his engravings exhibited in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions. In 2019, he was awarded the Bewick Society prize for his engraving Winter Garden.
