Charlotte Harris is an artist based in Folkestone. She studied at Leeds Metropolitan University and graduated with a 1st class Honours degree in Fine Art in 2003. At the age of 21, she won the National Portrait Gallery's 'BP Portrait Award' with a painting of her grandmother. Charlotte's painting of Dame Vivien Duffield was subsequently commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery to form part of their collection.
Charlotte has also been credited for her Still Life work, and was awarded the ING Purchase Prize at the Mall Gallery's Discerning Eye Exhibition in 2010 for her painting 'Strawberries and Cream'. Charlotte has exhibited regularly in London, as well as throughout the UK and internationally.
In 2014 Charlotte was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Arts by Leeds Metropolitan University.
Charlotte says, Whether in portraiture or still life paintings, my aim is always to bring the person or object alive to the viewer. I like to paint everyday objects and materials and find interest in the textures and characteristics of different surfaces. I pick up objects like pots and china ware from charity or second hand shops, enjoying the way the objects have aged over the years. Paper and the forms it can create have also been a frequent subject of my work; most recently the structural quality of origami flowers. I enjoy painting realistically but also like to allow the nature of the paint to add character and variation to the piece.
