Meryl Till specialises in handmade porcelain ceramic lighting with decorative textured surfaces; pierced to project delicate patterned light on the surroundings. The work uses the translucent properties of porcelain clay that lends well to atmospheric lighting.
Currently working with porcelain clay for the translucent properties that lend themselves to lighting, I make fine sheets which are assembled into cylindrical towers. The pieces vary in their surfaces treatment. Some have structured patterns, which I then pierce to project light onto the surroundings. Others focus on the varying thickness of clay, allowing differing intensities of light to pass through and so enhances the texture.
Recently, I have been experimenting with strands of fine copper wire embedded in the porcelain. When fired the wire melts, expanding underneath the surface and breaking through as copper oxide. When lit from within the copper wire strands stand out against the glowing porcelain, bringing the lamp to life, and taking forward my interest in the interaction of ceramic light.
