Kate Bajic

Biography

British jeweller Kate Bajic has over 18 years of experience exhibiting and selling her work in galleries and at exhibitions throughout the UK, Europe and the USA. She lives and works in a rural village in North Leicestershire, using the countryside and farmland around her as inspiration for her beautiful contemporary jewellery. Drawing on interests in both natural form and science Kate focuses on lichen species and their chemical compound structures as the main inspiration for her work. There are over 1,800 different species in the UK alone, offering an extensive source of inspiration. Through photography and sample collection, Kate examines their minute complexity and translates aspects of this into her work using traditional hand fabrication techniques. This gentle and involved approach allows slight imperfections, created during the making process, to bring a richness to her jewellery: something Kate celebrates, and hopes brings a vibrancy and value. She handcrafts pieces mainly in sterling silver and gold. Selected gemstones also form the focus in certain pieces, details of which are translated through into the finished jewellery, tying together the naturally occurring and the handmade. Kate creates her jewellery as limited edition or one-off pieces which are designed to compliment each other whilst still being unique and individual. They offer a tribute to the beauty and preciousness of the exquisite micro botanical forms that inspired them.
