Sandra's representations of the natural world often come from the wonder and joy of nature in life when walking locally or from various forms of media. She has always marvelled at the detail in a flower or insect, at the flight of a bird, or the regal presence of a stag.
'The Kingfisher' was inspired by a boating holiday several years ago, during which Sandra spent many an hour trying to capture images of these beautiful creatures flitting along the water or watching on a branch on the far side of the river.
Her absorption in the creation of each piece; the planning and testing of her approach; is an intense and ultimately wonderful experience. Her work uses the historic process of flameworking. She uses borosilicate clear and coloured glass to create solid, detailed sculptures.
The wings have been created using pieces of glass tubing that have been flame cut to size, coloured and shaped with small tools including tweezers, carbons and knives. They are then annealed in the kiln.
