Sarah Tyssen

Biography

Sarah Tyssen designs her scarves and blankets on a dobby loom in her Surrey workshop, hand weaving metres of fabric in refining weave constructions and colourways for her finished designs.

Calculating yarn quantities for production, she has yarns dyed and produces very detailed specifications for a mill in Yorkshire to weave small, limited editions of her designs on a mechanised loom. She works very closely with the mill to achieve the same finish as her handwoven samples.

Using power looms for this small-scale production means she can concentrate on the designing which is the part of the weaving process she enjoys most.

She uses her handwoven sample pieces to make hot water bottle covers, lavender bags and needle casesso nothing goes to waste!

Since she was a child, Sarah has had a real passion for colour and she loves the capabilities and restrictions of weaving, and the changing possibilities when one colour crosses another.

She takes inspiration from observations of everything around her. When inspiration strikes, then puts a series of warps onto the loom and plays with constructions and colours, and the design evolves as she works.
