Norma Stephenson

Biography

Norma Stephenson, was born in the picturesque town of Hawick in the Scottish Borders in 1940s, embarked on her artistic journey after securing a bursary to Sheffield Art College where she delved into the realms of fine art and graphic design. Later, she found solace and inspiration in the serene landscapes of the Forest of Bowland, a moorland haven dotted with farms and dry-stone walls, which became the cradle of her artistic expression.

Norma's artistic process combines observation with intuition, as she roams the landscape, capturing fleeting moments and vibrant hues that ignite her creativity. Armed with conte sticks, pastels, and charcoal, she infuses her work with energy and texture, often overlaying it with a gritty surface of clear gesso to enhance its tactile quality. Embracing spontaneity, she employs watercolour or acrylic underpainting, allowing glimpses of it to peek through, creating a dynamic interplay of layers and marks.

A member of the esteemed Pastel Society since 2009, Norma's paintings embody a harmonious balance between intricate detail and serene expanses, reflecting the rhythm of nature and the depth of her artistic vision. With each stroke, she seeks to evoke a sense of tranquility, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the beauty of the landscape and discover its hidden narratives.
