Midori Takaki

"When I was a child in Japan I thought I would become a writer. My head was a full of imagination, memories, feelings, thoughts and stories. Once a while, they overtook my daily life. All my imagination, memories etc. would just float around in my head, like clouds in the sky. I didn't know what to do with them.
Now I capture the floating thoughts in ceramics. Once they were given shapes, they become grounded. I create something almost daily. I call them my journal. I am writing in ceramics."Midori's work is original hand-built sculpture. She works with stoneware clay. Creating sculptures is a long process. They are bisque-fired up to 950C, and after they are glazed, they are fired up to 1240C. She does multiple glaze-firing her works until the desired colours and textures are attained. It requires patience, eyes for details and technical knowledge. It can take up to two and a half months to complete.
Brought up in Saitama, Japan. Midori came to the University of Kent to study for an MA in Social Anthropology in 1992. In 2008 she started ceramics, and in 2011 she started making sculptures. In 2013, she gained a postgraduate certificate in Applied and Fine Art (Ceramics) in Canterbury Christ Church University. After a sell-out MA show, in which she was a guest exhibitor, she turned professional. She had solo exhibitions in England and Tokyo. Her work is in private collections all over the world. She has lived in Canterbury for 24 years, and now considers Canterbury is her true hometown.
