Rowena Brown

Biography

Rowena carves out the pieces from strongly pigmented clays to construct architectural forms and then paints on layers of slips and glazes. The surfaces allude to environmental damage and abandonment, enclosing darkened interiors. The sculptures are intended quietly to evoke a response to place and provoke contemplation of isolation and community.
Rowena graduated with a degree in design from Central St Martins in London. She spent two years living in Palo Alto, California, where she began her ceramic sculpture career. On her return to the UK she graduated with a masters in Fine Art from Bretton Hall (University of Leeds) within the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Having worked from her studio in SE London for 15 years Rowena relocated her home and studio to the Isle of Iona in 2018. She has exhibited widely in London and all around the UK and abroad. In 2015 she was awarded the Ceramic Review prize for best newcomer at Ceramic Art London. Her work has been featured in numerous publications including the Telegraph, The Guardian, Ceramic Review and Coast.
