Matt Horne

Biography

Matt Horne uses crystalline glazes that are time-consuming and expensive to produce, but create stunning effects. The work is hand-thrown in porcelain which is one of the most difficult clays to work with.

The crystalline glaze is mixed using various ingredients, some in minute amounts. It is applied thickly to encourage it to run and fired at a temperature of up to 1300 degrees Centigrade. After this it is cooled to a specific holding temperature to encourage crystals to form in the glaze. The length of time at which the work is held at this temperature influences the size of the crystals, making each piece unique.
