Machi De Waard

Biography

Machi's interests in modern art, particularly in sculpture and minimalism, influence her work. Jewellery has been a full time pursuit since early 2007, with work regularly shown at galleries, fairs and exhibitions. Machi was Artist in Residence at South Hill Park Arts Centre in Bracknell from January 2010 - December 2011. Combining her studio practice with teaching, Machi runs jewellery classes in Reading and at her own studio.

Inspired by the perfection and simplicity of a circle, Machi's signature style rotates around simple shapes such as circles, spheres and ovals. A circle is a minimal shape - it encloses the maximum amount of space with the minimum circumference - which makes it a very neat, efficient shape. In Machi's designs, the gold (or sometimes silver) sphere provides a sense of tension or playfulness by balancing on the curve or peeking out from behind the silver.
