Surrey Artist of the Year 2019

21 September to 2 November 2019

Surrey Artist of the Year 2019

The New Ashgate Gallery invites members of the public to come and vote for their favourite artist.

The Surrey Artist of the Year competition is a partnership between the New Ashgate and the Surrey Artists Open Studios to celebrate the wealth of creative talent in Surrey. Starting in 2009; this aspirational exhibition offers a collective of local quality arts and craft as voted for by the public during open studio visits. The top scoring artists come together for a programme of events. There is a wide variety of artworks on show, all offering different materials and techniques: painting, printmaking, glass, textiles and mixed media.

The shortlisted artists are: Clare Bowen, Orlanda Broom, Jennifer Court, Diana Croft, Clare Edworthy, Penny Fleet, Robyn Horsburgh, Christine Hopkins, David Johns, Will Johns, Julie Noles, Philip Ryland, Penny Webb, Pippa Ward and Abigail Wicking.

Again, during the exhibition, until 18th October, 12noon, members of the public are encouraged to vote for an artist; and the artist with the most votes from public and judging panel, is named Surrey Artist of the Year 2019 on 18th at 7pm. The winner receives a bursary of £1,000, a solo show at the New Ashgate Gallery and a complementary Winner's Stand at the Surrey Contemporary Art Fair.

Orlanda Broom

Orlanda Broom's paintings are lush, colourful landscapes depicting a re-imagined world with no apparent human intervention or animal habitation. Orlanda's saturated colour palette is intended to entice the viewer and also imply a toxicity in the exaggerated hues and strange formations. She often uses resin, which has a glasslike finish and echoes the sappy excretions that the plants might exude. There is a timeless quality to these landscapes and a potential conflict between wanting to explore such an exotic place and the sense of entrapment should you find yourself there, in a wilderness.

Orlanda's small-scale paintings take a zoomed in look at plants and their figurative, sensuous elements. Throughout her work there is a contrasting celebration of nature's dreamlike beauty and the foreboding sense that these wild places are lost to us.

Orlanda regularly exhibits with galleries and works with international art advisors. She has been an artist since graduating in 1997 from Winchester School of Art, the MA course being based in Barcelona. Returning to UK from living aboard in 2008, she settled in London has worked as a full-time artist since. She is now based in the Surrey/Hampshire borders. Orlanda's paintings are often commissioned for large-scale works; these include the lobby piece for the Four Seasons in Downtown New York, a 4x4m centerpiece, and a large abstract for the Mandarin Oriental in London. She has been highlighted as a highly investible artist in the Financial Times and Money Week and her paintings are regularly selected for various competition exhibitions.
