Surrey Artist of the Year 2019

21 September to 2 November 2019

Surrey Artist of the Year 2019

The New Ashgate Gallery invites members of the public to come and vote for their favourite artist.

The Surrey Artist of the Year competition is a partnership between the New Ashgate and the Surrey Artists Open Studios to celebrate the wealth of creative talent in Surrey. Starting in 2009; this aspirational exhibition offers a collective of local quality arts and craft as voted for by the public during open studio visits. The top scoring artists come together for a programme of events. There is a wide variety of artworks on show, all offering different materials and techniques: painting, printmaking, glass, textiles and mixed media.

The shortlisted artists are: Clare Bowen, Orlanda Broom, Jennifer Court, Diana Croft, Clare Edworthy, Penny Fleet, Robyn Horsburgh, Christine Hopkins, David Johns, Will Johns, Julie Noles, Philip Ryland, Penny Webb, Pippa Ward and Abigail Wicking.

Again, during the exhibition, until 18th October, 12noon, members of the public are encouraged to vote for an artist; and the artist with the most votes from public and judging panel, is named Surrey Artist of the Year 2019 on 18th at 7pm. The winner receives a bursary of £1,000, a solo show at the New Ashgate Gallery and a complementary Winner's Stand at the Surrey Contemporary Art Fair.

Jennifer Court

Jennifer Court aims to express sensory feelings of being in a landscape. Of particular inspiration is the natural world. Its cycles, ebbs and flows and rhythms provide stimulation which filter down through her and into her work. Whether it be a turbulent sea or serene forest it is the experience of it and interactions with it which she translates into paint. Her work is an emotional response to natural environments; their colours, textures, smells and sounds and communicate a sense of vastness about the world yet focus on small moments.

Places that she has travelled to as well as places close to home filter down into her work. Sometimes she starts by recording her insights into a place. Whether it be by sketch, written note, photograph or collection of objects she is both spontaneous and varied in her approach to gathering resources. But it is those resources which jog her memory and bring back sensations she felt whist in that place. Jennifer also paints soon after coming into contact with a place, however the longer she is away in her studio the more memory and imagination play a part in her representations.

Jennifer works intuitively making marks, only to then cover them, looking for a balance which evades her until the moment she feels a resolution has been reached. Through different processes she explores what the paint can do, what marks she can make and what sensations she can translate.
