Surrey Artist of the Year 2019

21 September to 2 November 2019

Surrey Artist of the Year 2019

The New Ashgate Gallery invites members of the public to come and vote for their favourite artist.

The Surrey Artist of the Year competition is a partnership between the New Ashgate and the Surrey Artists Open Studios to celebrate the wealth of creative talent in Surrey. Starting in 2009; this aspirational exhibition offers a collective of local quality arts and craft as voted for by the public during open studio visits. The top scoring artists come together for a programme of events. There is a wide variety of artworks on show, all offering different materials and techniques: painting, printmaking, glass, textiles and mixed media.

The shortlisted artists are: Clare Bowen, Orlanda Broom, Jennifer Court, Diana Croft, Clare Edworthy, Penny Fleet, Robyn Horsburgh, Christine Hopkins, David Johns, Will Johns, Julie Noles, Philip Ryland, Penny Webb, Pippa Ward and Abigail Wicking.

Again, during the exhibition, until 18th October, 12noon, members of the public are encouraged to vote for an artist; and the artist with the most votes from public and judging panel, is named Surrey Artist of the Year 2019 on 18th at 7pm. The winner receives a bursary of £1,000, a solo show at the New Ashgate Gallery and a complementary Winner's Stand at the Surrey Contemporary Art Fair.

Philip Ryland

Philip was born in Warwickshire and studied fine art, sculpture at Staffordshire University. Since graduating he has concentrated on painting and became a full time artist over fifteen years ago when he gained a number of large scale commissions for a national chain of bars and restaurants.

At that time he was awarded studio space and mentorship at the Farnham Maltings as part of a creative business start up scheme and began selling work through a London gallery, exhibiting both in the UK and internationally through art fairs. He has since worked on many large corporate and private commissions both locally and nationally.

Philip's abstract and semi abstract painting comes from a wealth of sources; travel, personal photos, local landscapes or the daily dog walk. He uses several images to build up layers either digitally or in sketchbooks before starting on canvas. This becomes the basis of a lengthy process of building up and partially scrubbing back layer after layer of paint, often with a new image on top of the other. His latest work adds a further masked-out impasto layer, almost obscuring the painting entirely. This distills the essence of it's source, creating a painting that becomes its own unique thing.

Philip lives and works in Farnham.
