The New Ashgate Gallery invites members of the public to come and vote for their favourite artist.
The Surrey Artist of the Year competition is a partnership between the New Ashgate and the Surrey Artists Open Studios to celebrate the wealth of creative talent in Surrey. Starting in 2009; this aspirational exhibition offers a collective of local quality arts and craft as voted for by the public during open studio visits. The top scoring artists come together for a programme of events. There is a wide variety of artworks on show, all offering different materials and techniques: painting, printmaking, glass, textiles and mixed media.
The shortlisted artists are: Clare Bowen, Orlanda Broom, Jennifer Court, Diana Croft, Clare Edworthy, Penny Fleet, Robyn Horsburgh, Christine Hopkins, David Johns, Will Johns, Julie Noles, Philip Ryland, Penny Webb, Pippa Ward and Abigail Wicking.
Again, during the exhibition, until 18th October, 12noon, members of the public are encouraged to vote for an artist; and the artist with the most votes from public and judging panel, is named Surrey Artist of the Year 2019 on 18th at 7pm. The winner receives a bursary of £1,000, a solo show at the New Ashgate Gallery and a complementary Winner's Stand at the Surrey Contemporary Art Fair.

Clare paints 'en plein air' in all weathers and seasons. Her style is contemporary impressionist and portrays subjects through her love of light and colour. She is passionate and devoted to her painting which shines through in her work.
Clare is inspired by being outside in nature and really observing what is there whilst also being challenged and excited to paint against the clock, capturing a moment in time. Clare turned professional in 2015 and has exhibited at the Mall Galleries in London with the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the New English Art Club. She was awarded the Royal Talens Prize in 2017, 2018 and the Artist Collection Award 2017, 2018 through the Artist Magazine.
Clare first painted in London with the Wapping Group as a guest and discovered how wonderful the Thames can be. Albert Bridge is her favourite on the river as she admires its classic old style and pastel colours. Bosham is on the south coast near her childhood home of Hayling Island. With beautiful light and a smattering of yachts it is perfect for her harbour scenes.
Clare lives in Haslemere, Surrey and in the studio she paints still lifes, especially seasonal flowers with their vibrant colours and natural compositions. She also develops works from her plein air studies making larger more dynamic pieces but still focusing on colour in her painterly impressionist style.
