PRIZE: a celebration of image

Private view: 26 April 2019, 6-8pm - all welcome

The exhibition brings nine award-winning artists to Farnham: all of them are internationally accomplished and recognised for excellence and talent through a prestigious art prize.

The exhibition presents painting by Peter Archer (Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize), Gareth Edwards (David Simon Contemporary Art Prize / the Platform Prize / National Maritime Art Prize), Martin Greenland (John Moores Painting Prize), Charlotte Harris (BP Portrait Award) and Michael Porter (Derek Balmer Painting Prize / European Prize for Painting, Belgium).

Print by John Hoyland (John Moores), Sir Terry Frost (John Moores), Sandra Blow (Guggenheim International Award) and Bruce McLean (John Moores).

It reflects on the Gallery's beginnings 60 years ago: New Ashgate was the first provincial gallery with nationally and internationally known artists such as Anthony Caro, Elizabeth Frink, Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Pablo Picasso and Graham Sutherland.

This will be an exceptional opportunity to appreciate and collect work by these highly accomplished stars of the art world outside London and close to home.

Martin Greenland

Martin Greenland is a highly respected contemporary artist based in the Lake District, Cumbria. There are two driving forces behind his practice: the first is a commitment to inventing, to creating a whole image, a believable entity, entirely from 'scratch'. The second driving force is a reluctant dedication to landscape painting.

Greenland loves to explore, analyse, digest the 'real' landscape, wherever, whatever it is. He loves to refashion it, to invent, re-create using this language in which I feel fluent. All of what he does requires enormous amounts of memory. Some of Martin's paintings are drawn from memories of real places. All of his paintings combine elements of things he has encountered, whether strongly or vaguely remembered. What can be safely said is that these landscapes and every single element within them, exists only in these paintings.

Greeland's work has been displayed internationally. In 2003, he was commissioned to produce a painting of the Paternoster Square, next to St. Paul's Cathedral, London, which was presented to the Lord Mayor of London, and which now hangs in the Mansion House.

In 2006, Greeland won the John Moores Painting Prize; A premier art prize with an impressive list of previous winners including David Hockney, Patrick Heron, Euan Uglow and Peter Doig. His exhibitions are staged all around the UK including Beaux Arts (Bath), Discerning Eye (London) and Cornerstone Gallery (Liverpool).
