Rising Stars 2019

Rising Stars is a platform for some of the most exciting new crafts by emerging makers in crafts, design and applied arts - this year, the exhibition is bigger than ever, following a record number of applications.

This curated, selling exhibition will be showcased at the New Ashgate Gallery and also include a programme of makers' professional development events and a £500 prize. The participants are graduating students, recent graduates or at a pivotal moment in their early career due to changed circumstances.

This year, the project received 109 applications. 30 makers have been selected for the exhibition by a panel of craft professionals, focusing on their potential and talent; Rebecca Skeels, Course Leader for Postgraduate Programmes, School of Craft and Design, University for the Creative Arts, Gemma Curtis, Crafts Programme Coordinator, the Farnham Maltings and Dr Outi Remes, Director, New Ashgate Gallery.

Many of the graduating makers are at cross roads: they have a full portfolio of fabulous ideas, but are yet to establish their business skills and a network of collectors. Rising Stars offers just the right platform, and for many, it is a starting point for an exceptional career. Rising Stars is an opportunity for both makers as well as art collectors who wish to support and collect work by future stars.

The selected makers of exceptional talent are: Angelina Jane, Arra Textiles, Louise Bell, Georgia Buck, Holly Burton, Eve Campbell, Jenny Chan, Sara Chyan, Kim Colebrook, Mihaela Coman, Natalie Eagle, Tamir Erlich, Alice Funge, Alysa Freeman, Susanna Gogarty, Iona Hall, Qiang Li, Marek Liska, Sam Lucas, Ruth Martindale, Bekky May, Annette Mills, Poppy Norton, Benjamin Pearey, Mitch Pilkington, Nastassia Ramazankhani, Kyle Ramsey, Catherine Rua, Jinya Zhao and Marissa Ziesing.

Rising Stars is organised by the New Ashgate Gallery and supported by the Billmeir Charitable Trust. We work in partnership with the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham.

Holly Burton

2018 BA Hons Design Crafts, De Montfort University

Holly is a ceramic homeware designer who enjoys creating luxurious and functional tableware. Steeped in history, bone china has challenged her to focus on the balance between handmade and large-scale manufacturing for which the bone china industry is infamous.

Her inspiration stems from the growth of the tea and coffee industry. The commercial look of the collection works as a disguise for what is found deeper in the collection. Several pieces of the ware have multiple functions, the plate and bowl act as everyday dinner ware, but also transform into a beautiful statement cake stand.

In addition, the loose-leaf infuser gives the drinker the opportunity to increase or decrease how strong the tea will be as teabags are no longer necessary. The infuser slots into both the Black porcelain teapot and the Curious Chic teacups giving the user the flexibility of tea for one or tea for four.

Holly is based in Leicester.
