Rising Stars 2019

Rising Stars is a platform for some of the most exciting new crafts by emerging makers in crafts, design and applied arts - this year, the exhibition is bigger than ever, following a record number of applications.

This curated, selling exhibition will be showcased at the New Ashgate Gallery and also include a programme of makers' professional development events and a £500 prize. The participants are graduating students, recent graduates or at a pivotal moment in their early career due to changed circumstances.

This year, the project received 109 applications. 30 makers have been selected for the exhibition by a panel of craft professionals, focusing on their potential and talent; Rebecca Skeels, Course Leader for Postgraduate Programmes, School of Craft and Design, University for the Creative Arts, Gemma Curtis, Crafts Programme Coordinator, the Farnham Maltings and Dr Outi Remes, Director, New Ashgate Gallery.

Many of the graduating makers are at cross roads: they have a full portfolio of fabulous ideas, but are yet to establish their business skills and a network of collectors. Rising Stars offers just the right platform, and for many, it is a starting point for an exceptional career. Rising Stars is an opportunity for both makers as well as art collectors who wish to support and collect work by future stars.

The selected makers of exceptional talent are: Angelina Jane, Arra Textiles, Louise Bell, Georgia Buck, Holly Burton, Eve Campbell, Jenny Chan, Sara Chyan, Kim Colebrook, Mihaela Coman, Natalie Eagle, Tamir Erlich, Alice Funge, Alysa Freeman, Susanna Gogarty, Iona Hall, Qiang Li, Marek Liska, Sam Lucas, Ruth Martindale, Bekky May, Annette Mills, Poppy Norton, Benjamin Pearey, Mitch Pilkington, Nastassia Ramazankhani, Kyle Ramsey, Catherine Rua, Jinya Zhao and Marissa Ziesing.

Rising Stars is organised by the New Ashgate Gallery and supported by the Billmeir Charitable Trust. We work in partnership with the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham.

Sam Lucas

2018 MA Ceramics, Cardiff Metropolitan University
1990 BA (Hons) Ceramics, Cardiff School of Art

After working for twenty years in the creative arts department of a specialist college for young people with complex needs, Sam decided to undertake an MA in ceramics.

Sam's body of work Strange Stranger explores the weight and awkwardness of being in the body, the pain this alienation can cause, and ironically the beauty and humour that results from this diversity.

These objects may make you stop and stare, out of curiosity and inquisitiveness. You might be slightly confused, bemused, unnerved, and perhaps disturbed by their uncanny nature and relentless resistance to conform.

She uses an embodied approach to making, a repetitive, cathartic and rhythmic motion: twisting from the wrist and elbow and producing objects that are more about being than being seen. They are frozen moments in time.

The position of the work is unfixed, both grasping out at the world and bound to itself, caught as if in a game of 'cat and mouse' yet with nowhere to hide from the inevitable and perpetual anxiety, only the humour can save you.

Sam is an artist in residence at Fireworks Clay Studio in Cardiff.
