Rising Stars 2019

Rising Stars is a platform for some of the most exciting new crafts by emerging makers in crafts, design and applied arts - this year, the exhibition is bigger than ever, following a record number of applications.

This curated, selling exhibition will be showcased at the New Ashgate Gallery and also include a programme of makers' professional development events and a £500 prize. The participants are graduating students, recent graduates or at a pivotal moment in their early career due to changed circumstances.

This year, the project received 109 applications. 30 makers have been selected for the exhibition by a panel of craft professionals, focusing on their potential and talent; Rebecca Skeels, Course Leader for Postgraduate Programmes, School of Craft and Design, University for the Creative Arts, Gemma Curtis, Crafts Programme Coordinator, the Farnham Maltings and Dr Outi Remes, Director, New Ashgate Gallery.

Many of the graduating makers are at cross roads: they have a full portfolio of fabulous ideas, but are yet to establish their business skills and a network of collectors. Rising Stars offers just the right platform, and for many, it is a starting point for an exceptional career. Rising Stars is an opportunity for both makers as well as art collectors who wish to support and collect work by future stars.

The selected makers of exceptional talent are: Angelina Jane, Arra Textiles, Louise Bell, Georgia Buck, Holly Burton, Eve Campbell, Jenny Chan, Sara Chyan, Kim Colebrook, Mihaela Coman, Natalie Eagle, Tamir Erlich, Alice Funge, Alysa Freeman, Susanna Gogarty, Iona Hall, Qiang Li, Marek Liska, Sam Lucas, Ruth Martindale, Bekky May, Annette Mills, Poppy Norton, Benjamin Pearey, Mitch Pilkington, Nastassia Ramazankhani, Kyle Ramsey, Catherine Rua, Jinya Zhao and Marissa Ziesing.

Rising Stars is organised by the New Ashgate Gallery and supported by the Billmeir Charitable Trust. We work in partnership with the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham.

Iona Hall

2018: BA (Hons), Jewellery and Silversmithing, Glasgow School of Art

Iona's jewellery and boxes are a response to her visits to the beaches of Mull, Iona, Skye and those close to her home in the highlands. When she glances across the beach she is naturally drawn to nature's inconsistencies. The beauty of organic lines, forms and patterns are what appeal to Iona. The allure of the movement of the seaweed on the rocks swaying from side to side in the water as the sea retreats became a source of inspiration.

Iona explores movement, textures and elements from her observations of the found objects. She wants to establish a sense of discovery in her work, and to recreate thefeeling of collecting the 'perfect' stone on the beach. She aims to project the compellingfeeling to pick this box up like it is a piece of treasure or the keepsake that demands further exploration. Using multiple techniques enables Iona to explore different textures, movements and finishes within her work, allowing for a variety of interactions.

Iona is based in Reading, Bishopsland Educational Trust.
