Tracey Benton

My name is Tracey Benton. I grew up in West Yorkshire, spent 18 years in Bristol as a journalist and PR. I now live on the North Devon coast. I have a small studio on Butcher's Row in Bideford Pannier Market alongside other artists and makers. It's quite a creative hub and I love it.

I started my creative journey upcycling. I then spent many years studying and exploring ceramics, but the moment I started experimenting with wool, I was hooked. It's a lovely natural material to work with and I'm particularly drawn to its textural and sculptural qualities.

I mainly use a process called needle felting (also known as dry felting) to create my British wildlife sculptures. I do however also like to mix in other materials and techniques such as wet felting, wire work and I've recently been exploring adding an interactive element using music box mechanisms.

Needle felting involves using a special needle with tiny notches that catch and bind the fibres together. Wet felting, on the other hand, requires rubbing the fibres together with soap and water to help them bind together.

I sculpt each piece individually by hand. A single piece takes several hours to make. Details are added to the work using embroidery, beads and wool.

I'm lucky enough to live in North Devon - a stunning part of the country - so it is easy to draw my inspiration from the natural world around me: I have an abundance of birds twittering at the bottom of the garden and I often see cheeky fox or a startled deer crossing my path when I'm out walking the dog.

My work has been featured in magazines such as Period Living, Country Living and Devon Life. I have also showcased and exhibited my work at shows such as The Contemporary Craft Festival in Bovey Tracey, The Great Northern Craft Fair, Lustre and Cornwall Design.
