Virginia Ray

Biography

At the heart of Virginia Ray's artistic practice is a belief in the importance of landscape in reflecting the evolution of nature and an expression of cultural identity and self. Virginia's work ranges from vast landscapes to intimate studies using an extensive range of materials on canvas including mixed media, natural materials from the land, photographs and the written word.

Taking inspiration from the landscape, Virginia explores the ecology, physical environment and identity of those people who have lived within it. The sincerity of place in her work is carried through the words and images of these people often blended into her canvas as in the landscape. Her paintings evoke an honest and calm continuation of the passage of time. Incorporating materials collected from the land, old maps and photographs Virginia seeks to remind of the social, economic, and geological layering of this land.

Virginia studied History at Lancaster University and has an MA in Fine Art, Farnham UCA.

Virginia's work has been exhibited in Surrey, Norfolk, London, Yorkshire and Ibiza. Virginia also works as a freelance artist with the Watts Gallery in Compton, Surrey.
