Fliff Carr

From early childhood Fliff has been fascinated by the collecting habits of past generations and their recorded and secret histories. They have inspired in her a love of objects and their relationship to daily life. These collected artefacts, fragments of a past narrative are a constant inspiration for her work. Collected items as well as detail from fields as diverse as book illustration, cathedral glass, machinery and lace inform the texture, shape and imagery present in her collection.

Fliff has worked with clay in her studio in Camden, north London for the last 16 years. She studied ceramics at City Lit in London, having previously worked as a makeup artist, specializing in special effects and character work for film and television. Her ceramic work is eclectic, including tall organic forms in muted burnished colours, conceptual abstract artworks and finely thrown and hand rolled domestic ware. Each piece, uniquely crafted, is characterized by its attention to detail - an irregular rim, or extended handle - lending a sense of lively fluidity and delicacy to the work.

Fliff's most recent pieces, made with white earthenware clay, are embossed, stamped or inlaid with the subtle shades and intricate details of a variety of textures drawn from vintage fabrics as well as from her found objects from the banks of the Thames.
