Amanda Hoskin

Biography

Living and painting in Cornwall makes a simple everyday journey to Amanda's studio an inspiration or a 10 mile hike along the coastal path a source of endless ideas.

"Cornwall is unique and for this solo show I wanted to illustrate through my work how I feel about it. I decided to return to some of my favourite places those that draw me back again and again and for this reason I feel the show has a eclectic mix with paintings of beaches, clifftops, flowers, moorlands and woodlands. Using sketches created in situ I then return to my studio where I work on my larger oil paintings, working this way gives me the initial connection with the landscape, experimenting with mix media in my sketchbooks I then using all of this information to create my oils.

This county has so many places to visit each with their own sense of idenity, history and beauty. There is a richness in its landscape that has always inspired, artists, writers, poets and film makers long may this continue."

After art school, Hoskin became a freelance wildlife illustrator, working and living in London, but began to miss Cornwall. In the early 1990s she returned and at first worked as a sailing instructor mainly at Mylor on the beautiful Fal Estuary. She continued to paint, but changed medium from watercolour to oil. Her style became far freer and she began to concentrate on the changing skies and landscapes around her. Now painting full-time, Hoskin has established herself as one of the leading landscape artists in Cornwall with a growing following around the UK.
