My graphics background influenced my early print works, which involved exploration of the medium using line and form, exemplified in the vegetable studies. Nowadays, I experiment with less predictable techniques, such as xerox copying to enlarge and modify the textures, shapes and colours of the images.
I work almost exclusively in aquatints for the range of contrast and detail they can give, and for the velvety texture achievable by over-printing colours using multiple plates. Vibrant colours add strength to the images and heighten their surreal qualities. I like quirky and slightly fantastical subjects and sometimes oversize images of fruit, flowers, vegetables and fish.
Susie Perring attended the London College of Printing from 1963-1967. Thereafter she pursued a successful career as a graphic designer, working with a number of prestigious design groups. After a break to start a family, she began a number of part-time activities, including distinctive interior design and decoration.
In 1984 she returned to full time artistic work, specialising as a printmaker in etchings, line drawing and aquatints. She has exhibited widely, both in the UK and abroad, including five Royal Academy Summer exhibitions. She did two commissions for the new P&O liner Oriana and for The Pride of Rotterdam and The Pride of Hull, and more recently for the Queen Mary 2. She has also taught for the Outreach programme of Dulwich Picture Gallery's Education Department.
