Artist Statement
Sonia North is both a Free Form sculptor and photographer and trained in Illustration at Portsmouth University.
She explored the use of macro photography as a medium to discover forms not usually visible, focusing on only part of the object. She sees the macro image as a different way of seeing natural objects which as a whole can be ordinary but when viewed through the macro lens can become far more intriguing. Although the photograph reflected an image of what Sonia wanted to see she needed to express herself physically and sculpture fulfilled that role, and as with the photography the natural environment is where Sonia draws her inspiration, expressing emotions within. She describes her ongoing work as an exploration into beauty. The forms are curvaceous and have an aesthetic harmony. She feels that it is important for the viewer to want to touch the sculpture. Key influences on Sonia have been the works of Brancusi and Barbara Hepworth. Not only is Sonia creating a physical sense of inner being, she is allowing the material, a natural resource to be appreciated for its own unique beauty. Wood is alive and warm and gives a sense of growth which evolves whilst working the material.
Sonia is currently continuing her work and is starting to experiment with stone, with photography always being an essential part of her creative process.
