Artist Statement

Gareth Mason's work is rooted in his admiration of, '…archetypal pot forms, those that cross eons of time, that are pan-global and pan-cultural'. Form is his paramount consideration and he has profound respect for formal proportion yet his approach is fluid: inkeeping with what he describes as 'the malleability of skill', his pots are often distinctly asymmetrical. He studied at Wimbledon School of Art and then West Surrey College of Art & Design, during which time he had a brief and formative period of study in Japan. A key residency at South Hill Park Arts Centre culminated in 1998 with his first solo exhibition. Gareth says "clay is a sensual and addictive material. I am never sated. My inclination is always to 'push'. Risk is essential. Each firing is a gamble and I often lose but chance affords me moments where heart, hand and fire converge. These are the moments that spur me on."
